Oscar Quiroz Races Omnium Event in Georgia

Twenty-four-year-old cyclist Oscar Quiroz departed the country on Thursday to compete in the fifth annual Healthy Newton Omnium. It’s a competitive cycling race being held in Newton County in Georgia, U.S.A on June ninth and tenth. Quiroz, who was invited to compete by one of the sponsors of the race, says it is his first time competing in the Newton Omnium and he will be riding in the masters’ category.  On Thursday, we caught up with Quiroz before he left Belize and he shared more about his participation and what it means for his personal development as a cyclist.

“It is a professional category one to two race in the U.S. It is very high level being that it is professional. I am privileged that I got invited to go and I am hoping that I can showcase some of Belize’s talent and of course my individual talent as well. Of course I am expecting, I have high hopes; however,  I am being a little realistic right and I can say that I’ll be going there with a lot of confidence in the form that I am in and I think that with a positive mind I can expect very good results.”

“Talk to us about your preparation for this event?”

Oscar Quiroz

“So, I think it’s almost two months ago we went to Australia to compete in the Commonwealth Games and we actually sent three athletes here from Belize. I won’t go into details with that, however, that was part of the preparation as well. Being that we’re racing at much higher level and this level here, this gives me higher hopes being that I am going to compete there but at lower level and so I just kept on rolling with trend and I made sure I gave my body a lot of rest and ofcourse well I could just hope for the best at this point.”

Andrea Polanco

“Are you going to be competing at a level that is above what you normally compete here in Belize?”

Oscar Quiroz

“Oh, yeah, for sure. These guys out There are probably constantly racing, they probably doing it for a career some of them and so I think that all though it’s going to be high I never go in there doubting myself. So, I mean I am confident in my form and like I said a positive mind should give me positive results.  I think in order for me to improve as a cyclist, or anybody else here in sports in Belize, we need to venture outside and see what the competition is like internationally, right? Because once we go international, it is a higher level and this is the only way we know and have to do in order to progress, right.”

Quiroz returns to Belize on Monday.
