Managing International Patent Cooperation

The Belize Intellectual Property Office hosted a seminar on the Patent Cooperation Treaty.  Belize acceded to the treaty in June 2000 and today, two intellectual property rights experts, including a representative of the World Intellectual Property Organization, met in Belize to discuss WIPO’s role in processing patents before they are sent to BELIPO.  We spoke with the Deputy Registrar of BELIPO who tells us that while there are still challenges in country, seminars like this one help to break down some of the barriers.

“There is the lack of expertise in terms of the area of engineering, pharmaceuticals. We don’t have an infrastructure in place that persons can test their inventions to see if the requirement has been met, so that is one of the challenges.  The outcome that we want to achieve at the end of the seminar is to create the awareness. I think it is important for people to see that the BELIPO is a public office that exists to serve the interest of the public when it comes to their inventions. We also want to see more inventions created by our people and for the Belizeans. Even more so, it can be something that is internationally recognized and well-known through the use of the system. So, it is a view that it will not just end at this seminar. There will be continuous awareness of what inventions are and what type of inventions you can get creative with and securing the process of how you can get this registered at our office and also through the international bureau in Geneva, Switzerland.”
