Got an Invention? Get it Patented!

Olabimpe Akinkuolie

And on the topic of patents, BELIPO says that only a few Belizeans file applications for patents. According to the Deputy Registrar, if you have an invention, you can go to its Belmopan office and file a local or international application, which will then be taken to the bureau in Geneva, Switzerland. For the international application, you get to designate the countries where you want your patent registered. Olabimpe Akinkuolie says that the process takes about thirty months.

Olabimpe Akinkuolie, Deputy Registrar, BELIPO

“It is a long tedious process because one thing we have to keep in mind, once you want to register your patent, international search authorities within WIPO will have to examine that the invention is new and it has inventive steps that someone with an ordinary skill can use and also that it is industrial applicable; so it is something that once it is being used it makes technical problems that we face from day to day very easier and we are surrounded by inventions everyday and that is why this seminar touches on the aspect of now how you can register this invention and gain exclusive rights for twenty-years of this sole invention and how can you the inventor can capitalize and make income from it.  The advantage is one: you are introducing something new to the market; two you are bringing about solutions to technical problems that exist in Belize through your inventions. And another advantage is you having exclusive rights for twenty years, you as the inventor can dictate how you want to generate further income for the invention; one, you can license it or you can assign it.  So there is a huge advantage in registering your invention so that at the end of the day you do not allow someone to gain access to it and go behind your back and register it and put their name to it. So, this is a process that we are making it known to the Belizean public that they can use this Patent Cooperation Treaty which is an international multi-application system that can be used for your benefit.”
