Protestor Calls for Justice

The occasion of the court case brought a handful of protestors from the island in blue shirts to the Battlefield Park. Like their political fellows they believe they were given a raw deal in the counting and reconciliation process and are calling out the Election and Boundaries Commission and by extension the government. We hear from one of them, Santos Acosta.

Santos Acosta, Protestor

“If law prevails and that is what we expect, we should get the court to make a recall of the election. That is what our legal team is asking for; an [annulment] of the past election because we found a lot of improprieties, let’s call it that, and because of that San Pedro went to the red, when it was supposed to be blue.”

“And so this is historical as said before; there hasn’t been much success in doing something like this in the courts before. What will be your next step should you not succeed today?”

Santos Acosta

“First of all, like you said, this is historical and it hasn’t been successful in the past; and I would think the reason is that the evidence that other cases presented were not as strong and conclusive. But I personally believe that this one is a very good case and the evidence that we have should put it on our side. However, we know that in Belize in the past few years, the Government has been intruding in every single aspect of our lives and I would not be surprised if they took hands in this also.”
