Police were also quizzed today about an incident that occurred on April twenty-seventh in Trial Farm Village, Orange Walk in which Demetrio Pott and his brother were beaten badly following a traffic accident in the village.  Forty-seven-year-old Pott is tonight clinging to life at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital after he and his brother were attacked immediately after they had crashed into another vehicle. The family claims that Orange Walk police has failed them because they did not record a statement from Pott while he was conscious and now that he is believed to be brain dead, they may never get justice for what was done to him. This allegation has triggered an internal investigation by the Professional Standards Branch of the Police Department. Assistant Commissioner of Police Joseph Myvett says that an investigation is ongoing into the incident and two persons have since been detained.

“I know that the police has launched an intense investigation into that matter and two persons have since been detained and we are in consultation with the D.P.P. office as to whether or when if any charges will be preferred against them. I know also that one other person is wanted in relation to this investigation.”

“Now Mister Pott’s family has complained that he is no longer, Demetrio Pott is no longer able to give a statement because he is nonresponsive and in fact, he is believed to be brain dead. They say that for a while after the accident, he was conscious and they begged Orange Walk Police to please come and take a statement and they failed to do so. No statement has been taken from him and he may never regain consciousness. How do you respond to this?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“That matter as well is also being looked at from an internal point. The internal affairs or the PSB is looking at the internal side of that as well.

“Now regards this accident, I know the other Mister Pott who was driving the vehicle, I am told he has given a statement. Might that be enough to bring charges in this case against those persons who assaulted them?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“Well I believe there were other witnesses who the police are trying to locate in relations to this investigation as well.”
