“We the People” announce support for proposals

It may not be as big a piece of news as yesterday’s announcement by U.D.P. Leader Dean Barrow, but today the reform movement known as We the People, weighed in with its pronouncement on the proposals to end the Guatemalan claim. And that verdict is a resounding yes. Citing a desire for peace between neighbours, the hope for increased economic development and the need to curb lawless behaviour by Guatemalans and Hondurans on Belizean territory, two meetings of affiliated candidates voted unanimously to endorse the proposals. Today’s announcement leaves only one political force unheard from on the subject; that is NABR, the National Alliance for Belizean Rights. NABR spokesman, Miss Emma, today told News 5 that they are still consulting party members and supporters and expect to make their position public before the third of October. NABR has traditionally been the most vocal opponent of any settlement with Guatemala.

In related news, the Belize City Council and Ministry of Foreign Affairs will host a town meeting on Friday night at which the public can ask questions about the proposals. The presentation, which will be made by Ambassadors Eamon Courtenay and Stuart Leslie, gets underway at seven at the Bishop Sylvester Memorial Centre.
