Guatemala Foreign Minister Commends Relations with Belize

Sandra Jovel Polanco

News Five, in an interview with Guatemala’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, touched on two topics of special interest to Belizeans in the wake of Sunday’s referendum. The first concerns relations between the countries. At the highest level, says Sandra Jovel Polanco, things could not be better. Polanco cites that she has met cordially with her Belizean counterpart Wilfred Elrington and the recent cultural exchange between the Garifuna populations of both countries as evidence that we are much more neighborly than before.

Sandra Jovel Polanco, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Guatemala [Translated]

“I think that the bilateral relations between Guatemala and Belize are at their best at the moment. They could not have been better. We have excellent relations not only at the ministerial level but also at the presidential level. President [Jimmy] Morales is convinced that the bilateral relations with Belize can only get better. Evidence of this was the recent Garifuna cultural exchange that took place here in Guatemala. They performed at various places and the participation was very good. This is allowing Guatemala and Belize to have a participatory exchange. With regards to Foreign Minister [Wilfred] Elrington, we met recently at the O.A.S where we discussed the latest developments regarding this specific issue. And I believe the relationship with Belize has been improving much more.”

“… things could not be better.” Really? I think if the Guatemala military continues to bully Belizeans on the Sarstoon, and the Guatemalans continue to cross the western border illegally, things really could be better… WAY BETTER. One way things could be better is if Belize claims your country Mrs. Polanco. Let’s discuss THAT possibility at the I.C.J.!
