Progressive Party Wants Seat at Table for Education Campaign

Paco Smith

While there were bouquets across the border between Belize and Guatemala following Sunday’s referendum result, color the Belize Progressive Party unsurprised and unimpressed. They said as much in a press statement issued Monday evening, reminding that the Guatemalan leadership was taking advantage of what it called local “facilitation” that puts Belize at severe risk to lose land territory. Now, the Progressives say it is up to Belizeans to get all the facts. But if they had their way, the result would be no. Chairman Paco Smith said today that the B.P.P. wants a seat at the table in planning the upcoming referendum campaign, in order to ensure that both sides receive fair play.

“There is never a point where you can have too much information. So we advocate that an information – and I underscore the word information, not misinformation, campaign – goes forward. In saying an information campaign, we’re talking about providing Belizeans with the full scope as to the pros and cons with regards to this situation. Of course, we advocate the no vote to the I.C.J. And it’s important that the Belizean public, both at home and abroad – because I include Belizeans abroad in this, after all they are Belizeans first and foremost – that they become attuned with regards to the different dynamics and all the nuances involved with regards to the pitfalls of going to the I.C.J.   On behalf of the B.P.P., we would fully expect to be invited to be an integral part of this education campaign, because as I underscored, it’s important that Belizeans know both sides. So this is an appeal to the powers that be: if you truly want to educate the people of Belize with regard to this issue, invite the B.P.P. to the table, because we are more than ready and willing to be there, alongside you, to give both sides of the coin.”
