Basketballers Christen New Civic

A few hundred high school students converged on the Civic Center this afternoon in somewhat of a dry run.  The facility opened its doors this afternoon for a pair of pre-exhibition games, ahead of an official launch on April thirtieth.  Minister of Sports Patrick Faber told us more.

Patrick Faber, Minister of Sports

“We wanted an opportunity to test the facilities even before they are officially opened.  As you may have heard by now, we intend to do the official opening of the Civic Center on April thirtieth.  That is a Monday night and as all Belizeans know, the Tuesday is the May first holiday, so we are expecting a grand event on that occasion.  But we wanted to do two things; firstly, to send the signal as early as possible, that we will be putting into action exactly what we’ve been saying all along, that the Civic Center is not just a big building that looks good and will not serve the people.  And so, this is the first demonstration of that.  As I’ve announced as well, we will also be opening the Civic up for the teachers on Teachers Day when that comes up next month.  So, as we’ve been saying, this is a facility that will be used by everybody and we are starting on the right foot with the young people, our secondary schools on this occasion.”

“Now as the Minister of Sports, I noticed that you were also handing out awards as well.  Can you speak to that?”

Patrick Faber

“Well, the awards are given to the four teams that are participating today and what we have are the male and female champions and sub-champions from the central region of the secondary schools basketball competition that has actually closed.  So the awards were not for winning, it is for participating in today’s event.”
