Big Dreams for Returning Youth Ambassadors

Washington D.C. and the states of Alabama and Idaho in the United States are as far apart culturally and politically as they are geographically. So it made for a very interesting experience for nine young Belizeans selected by the U.S. Embassy for a cultural exchange programme starting three weeks ago. On their travels across America, they learned valuable lessons about protecting the environment, stepping up as leaders and involving themselves in worthwhile business creation opportunities. They landed at the Philip Goldson International Airport this morning and the leader of the group, Alexis Guy, shared with us how they will put their lessons from their travels to use at home.

“We have created a project. In Washington, D.C., we went to a place called Wider Circle. They distribute clothing to those in need, that may need clothing for job interviews and also good furniture for their homes and stuff like that. So our project is basically to alleviate poverty – I know it sounds like something big but we can all do something. And it starts with something as basic as education. We can offer after-school tutoring within our school communities since we are from different districts, and we can also get other students to volunteer to help with the tutoring after school. As well as we can ask for donations from companies for food, clothing, monetary donations, whatever it is, to help those in the rural areas that may be in need.”
