Mexico’s Pena Nieto Targets Donald Trump over Latest Threats

Enrique Peña Nieto

In international news, U.S. president Donald Trump has signed an order to send National Guard troops to stop illegal immigrants heading to the United States. This comes on the heels of negative statements he has made against Mexico about building a wall to keep out criminals and rapists and other undesirable persons in the interest of American security. Most recently, he threatened Mexico over a caravan of hundreds of Central Americans who were heading toward the U.S.  The latest salvo by the U.S. President has not gone down well for Mexicans and Mexico’s president Enrique Peña Nieto. On Thursday, he went directly at Trump, speaking from the presidential palace in Mexico City. Pena Nieto said that he joined the Mexican Senate and all presidential candidates in condemning Trump’s acts.

Enrique Peña Nieto, Mexican President [Translated]

“President Trump: If you wish to reach agreements with Mexico, we stand ready. As we have proved until now, always willing to engage in a dialogue, acting in earnestness, in good faith and in a constructive spirit. If your recent statements are the result of frustration due to domestic policy issues, [due] to your laws or to your Congress, it is to them that you should turn to, not to Mexicans. We will not allow your negative rhetoric to define our actions. We will only act in the best interest of Mexicans.”

President Peña Nieto’s statement is considered unusual because Mexico normally does not react to unsavoury remarks, but Trump has been a thorn in the side of Belize’s northern neighbour. Trump has also threatened to end the North American Free Trade Agreement between the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
