What Really Happened to Kendis Flowers?

Kendis Flowers

By News Five’s unofficial count, there have been forty-eight murders in the span of three months and a few days, or on average sixteen per month. One of the more sensational murders was the execution of Ghost Town boss Kendis Flowers, murdered two weeks ago at the corner of Sittee and Mahogany Streets in Belize City. One person is being sought for this incident. Now that area is not only a known hot spot; it is also rival gang territory.  The wounds are still raw for Flowers’ family who believes he died at the hands of the Gang Suppression Unit and that the police are covering up to ease tensions in the volatile community.  Sandra Uter, his fearless grandmother, today provided new information on his execution and says the video showed to the family, confirms nothing of who pulled the trigger. News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

“My grandson was dropping off some females, the police dehn spotted him, they started firing at the vehicle. He jumped out, ran into a yard. That was when the police came, saw him and ‘freezed’ him – members of the GSU. They were in the black truck along with ones in the white pickup truck also. They brought him out and they told him to freeze – put his hand behind his head – that is why he got shot on his finger also.”

For the first time, these details of what allegedly transpired on the morning of March seventeenth are being revealed and it tells a rather different story from what has been reported so far. But it is for these reasons that the family of Kendis Flowers says they have lost confidence in the police department following the execution of the twenty-six-year-old. Flowers’ body was discovered in front of a mechanic shop near the corner of Sittee and Mahogany Streets, in rival gang territory. He had been shot twice; once to the side and to the head. Even as the police say that there was no police involvement in the murder, the family maintains that Flowers was killed at the hands of the GSU.

“As I know it and as I understand it, one person is being sought. There is work to be done to have that person hand in himself so that a charge or some charges could be laid against him. But if we don’t tell the family that, they are not aware and ignorance spreads a lot of things. I could hear it in the voices or in the conversations that were being had, that they are not fully abreast or given an update as it relates to how far we are with the case.”

“They are covering up; they are covering up for the GSU because they are the ones that went to the Chinese shop about six o’clock the morning waiting for the people to open the shop door. So we know for a fact that they are involved.”

They say that the Police Department, as promised by investigators, would have allowed them to view surveillance footage from the area that captured the execution. But according to Sandra Uter the clip revealed to the family would shows only a van traveling to and from the scene, but not the commission of the crime.

“A video was retrieved from someone; I can’t mention the entity because of security reasons. But of course that can be shown to the family to let them see firsthand what really transpired. There was this allegation that there was a police officer who did the shooting, particularly a GSU officer, but that has been rubbished. The investigation has shown that the police officer was not even in the country at the time when the incident took place.”

Sandra Uter

“The video that was shown to us; that’s not even two seconds. Shows one vehicle flying that way and reversing back; that’s all the video that was shown to us and that’s not the video. That video run for twenty-four hours.  It had to mi capture it; it had to mi capture it because the van passed the same area where Kendis was lying on the ground dead. But they haven’t shown us that. They haven’t shown us that; they cut the video. If you have a camera that runs twenty-four hours, where is the rest of the video? As I told Mister Williams, I will walk from where the incident took place to the Chinese shop and if you see me on the camera that signifies that the video captured from the Chinese shop, but they didn’t want me to do that.”

“We have to move forward by showing them what really transpired but it comes at a cost. If we show them who the suspect is before he is arrested then there could be further breaches of the law. So, we want to deal with it on our own as police officers and have this suspect come into custody. But we are working with individuals who we believe could help us have this person safely in to our custody.”

Notwithstanding, the family says that they will exhaust all means possible to get justice for Kendis.

Sandra Uter

“We wah do everything we could, you know. If we have to try get a private investigator we will and retain a lawyer, we will. We are seeking justice and we will not stop; we will leave no stone unturned until we get justice for Kendis.”
