Murder among Friends in Buena Vista

George Hyde

The second murder in the Cayo District occurred in Buena Vista Village just outside of Spanish Lookout. Thirty-six-year-old George Hyde was killed in front of his friends. The group of men was hanging out at a friend’s house when a fight broke and Hyde was chopped to the neck. He died on the veranda where police discovered his body. Four persons have been detained in the wake of the murder, which police are treating as a death investigation at this stage. News Five’s Andrea was in the west today and found out that Hyde may have been killed over an ‘old beef.’

A social gathering turned deadly here in Buena Vista village over the Easter weekend. A group of men, reportedly friends, were socializing outside this house – drinking and joking – but a fight broke out after which someone picked up a machete and chopped thirty-six-year-old George Hyde to death.

“Well, they were drinking. I didn’t know because I live far from here. When I left my house, I saw the police patrol on this street. I came over to see what was happening. Supposedly, they say, because I didn’t see, but the one who killed him fled the scene but he was picked up at a checkpoint in Blackman Eddy. He is Alex. I don’t know his surname. But like I told you, he lived here for a short while, maybe about five months the most.”

But one of the men at the house supposedly had an ‘old beef’ with Hyde. That man, we understand, has only been living in Buena Vista for five months. But it had appeared that the man and Hyde had squashed their problems until that fateful Easter Sunday. Hyde was close friends with two of the other men he was socializing with. Those two men, we understand, are brothers and would frequently hang out with Hyde because he was in a relationship with their mother.  One of brothers owns the house where Hyde died.

“Right there on the little corridor is where they had the fight because he was lying dead right there.”

“How did they kill him? With a knife?”

Jose De la Rosa [Translated]

“A machete because the wounds were big.  He had a cut to the neck – and right here he had like two big chops.”

The killing sent shockwaves across the quiet community. The the last murder in the village happened on the same street last September. Hyde’s close friend Saul Hernandez lives two houses away from the crime scene – but he says he didn’t hear any disturbance in the neighborhood.

“After ten, I hear a noise over there and I opened the door and I see outside. I see lotta people and police out there. I gone close and I hear deh kill George.  I get frightened because they say deh kill the man deh and I get nervous. I can’t believe that happened right there. I can’t believe that happened.”

Police have since detained four persons in connection with Hyde’s killing. Police are treating this matter as a “death investigation.”  ACP Joseph Myvett explains why.

“The investigation can take several angles based on the evidence gathered, hence we have arrived at that conclusion until the post-mortem is finished and the documents submitted to the D.P.P. in order for her directives.”

“So, it is just a situation where the officers are being cautious that it is not officially noted as a murder?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“Until the investigation progresses, we will be able to determine such.”
