Belize and Guat. ministers to meet in Washington

Story Picture
It was an issue that was not discussed at the meeting of the Association of Caribbean States, but early next week, Foreign Minister Assad Shoman heads to Washington, D.C. for more talks with the Guatemalans. According to Shoman, two main points will be on the agenda.

“One of them is to preserve the proposals that were presented to us by the facilitators last September, until it becomes an appropriate time for them to be submitted to referenda in the two countries. Secondly, and most importantly I think, for the immediate situation, is to come to an agreement on new confidence building measures, because the ones we had in place for a couple of years now expired at the end of September. And as you know, these measures are designed to maintain peace and stability, especially along the border between the two countries and generally to build good relations between the two countries. So we are negotiating in effect a new agreement on these confidence building measures and this will be the major part of the agenda for those meetings in Washington next week.”

The ministerial meeting in Washington, D.C. is planned for December second and third.
