Father Gives Thanks for Daughter’s Surgery

Leiny Montalvo

One-year-old Leiny Montalvo is diagnosed with PDA, an abnormal blood flow occurring between two of the major arteries connected to her heart.  Along with her parents, she has traveled all the way from Chunox to Belize City for this special procedure.  The family has been struggling financially to seek medical attention outside of the country.  The success of this operation is a miracle.

Daniel Montalvo, Father of Leiny Montalvo

“I think it has been, when [she was born] she was detected with PDA and for us it was something new and it was very difficult.  Last year in August, the group from Gift of Life came here and thanks to Ms. Yvette who had been, I think the coordinator here in Belize, and through her we were contacted to come for my baby’s checkup and see how she is and then they detected that she would need surgery.  Well that really had impacted us a lot, we were a lot worried.  Well we were like, where are we going to find this, you know, and we tried our best to bring her almost every month at the beginning here in Belize and we found other means.  We tried to go to Chetumal to find another alternative and see, but actually after they had given us the expense of how much a surgery like this would cost us…”

“How much were they saying it would cost?”

Daniel Montalvo

“They were saying like twenty thousand dollars if we would actually do it.  But when we got the news that they are coming back and then Ms. Yvette told us that we are to come, it really got us very excited, you know, because it has been very difficult for the family, my wife and I, trying to find a way how to get my baby’s heart being cured.”

Unfortunately, two other kids who were diagnosed with severe heart disease and had been scheduled for appoints during this mission, succumbed to their conditions prior to the arrival of the visiting team.
