S.J.C. ties into computer programme

Story Picture
Another week, another set of computer installations. Today’s ceremonies, however, were a little bit different in that the school in question is no stranger to the digital domain.

Saint John’s College was one of the first educational institutions to introduce computers to its students. Today, S.J.C. is making great strides in developing a comprehensive electronic library that will give close to two thousand students immediate access to quality information.

Carlos Perdomo, President, S.J.C.

“But this is the first step in really trying to develop a good library that is endless in its reach for our kids to become, not only better educated but be more inquisitive and to question things and compare things with the rest of the world.”

…And this afternoon, with the implementation of Intelco’s and government’s computer programme, that objective was made possible. The gift of twenty computers with high speed internet access, will help students, especially in the Computer Information Course, access the data that was not always readily available at their finger tips.

Stuart Simmons, Head, Computer Information Course

“In terms of software designs to concepts, to hardware concepts, students are able to search the internet for that, which makes it very important in terms of learning more about the programmes. Also, there is so much educational material which we cannot get hard copies of, we can access the internet, we can get those resources, and those resources help the students a lot. So they are involved with that and we will also do the same thing.”

S.J.C.’s President, Carlos Perdomo, says he is aware that there are some students who are far more fascinated with the entertainment aspects of the internet…but is optimistic that they will use the computers to further their education.

Carlos Perdomo

“Right now in the Junior College we have a computer, at least one, in each department so that teachers from that department has use to at least this one computer that also has the internet capabilities, that allows them to quickly research and enrich their own teaching information and capabilities so that is a very quick example of how it expands and makes it better. Another thing is, we don’t have as many for students, because this is a very big high school, but again it arms the students to find a job quicker these days. If a student has a very good computer background, especially if he comes out of our computer information system courses or the business course where computer is now becoming a must, they are more saleable in the market.”

The S.J.C. library is open from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
