Will Belize Pursue Canadian Jordan Bacchus for Murder?

Jordan Bacchus

Canadian fugitive Jordan Bacchus was arrested for drug possession in Sudbury, Canada; he will also be charged for armed robbery and other crimes in Toronto recently. But will he be extradited to Belize? Bacchus is a person of interest in the May 2016 murder of Melvin Almendarez in San Pedro. Today, we asked Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington if the extradition of a Canadian citizen to Belize can even happen. Canada has extradition treaties with fifty countries, but the list does not include Belize.  The Canadian top court receives about a dozen extradition applications a year and has only agreed to hear one in the past three years. But here is how Elrington put it.

Wilfred Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs

“If we don’t have an extradition treaty with Canada, there would be no way in which we could apply for them to send him back. But I’d want to think that we do have one. I’d want to think so. And the reason why I’m saying that is because nothing has fundamentally changed from the time we were colonial status, colonial relationship, and when we were a British colony, I am sure they had extradition treaty with the United States as well as with Canada. I’d want to almost bet on that so I think there should be a process. It is not usual for us to find ourselves in that position where people who commit infractions here go abroad to the United States; I think this is kinda new. But I don’t think that this is something beyond our capacity. I am sure that we have the extradition treaty and we have the resources in our ministry which I am pretty certain we do that the initiative can be taken. I wouldn’t be dismissive of it. I will look into it. I saw a reference to it either on the news or in the media someplace. I haven’t followed it up, but now that you asked about it, I will find out from the Attorney General where that is; whether in fact we are going to be pursuing it and how.”
