New Ambassador Knows Belize Well; Guat Foreign Minister Planning Visit?

Georges de la Roche Du Ronzet

We reported last week that Guatemala has finally sent its Ambassador to Belize in the person of career diplomat Georges De La Roche Du Ronzet. His appointment comes almost two years after his predecessor, Manuel Estuardo Roldan Barillas, was abruptly recalled to that country in the wake of the shooting death of Julio Rene Alvarado Ruano inside the Chiquibul in Belizean territory. De La Roche arrived in country last Friday and presented his credentials to the Governor General as Guatemala’s top envoy on Tuesday. According to Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington, the government is pleased with the appointment because De La Roche has ties to Belize and his appointment also signals that relations are normalizing.

“He has been visiting Belize from his childhood days; they have relatives in Saint George’s Caye. In his childhood days, he used to spend his holidays there and he also has connections with the Geggs through marriage and the like. But also he told me that his grandfather, if not his great grandfather, actually started Brodie’s store. So he personally has a lot of connection with Belize; he is also well-connected with the British. I think some members of his family are actual British and may well be British diplomats too. He’s an accomplished diplomat; he speaks very well—both English and Spanish fluently and probably speaks other languages as well. Very excited to be posted to Belize and really excited about getting this matter resolved between our two countries finally at the I.C.J. hopefully.  Back to normal, I want to think so. In fact, we have been getting some good signals for some time now and those signals have been getting better and better. In my journey’s abroad, some of the meetings that I’ve had, I got the opportunity to meet Ambassador De La Roche. And also when I met with the Foreign Minister, they were excited to tell us that he would in fact have been coming to Belize on the eleventh of February. The foreign minister as well is very desirous of coming to Belize. She wants to see what the adjacency zone looks like, the O.A.S. office she wants to come and visit. I am hoping that when she does so, she will be able to make a courtesy call on the Prime Minister.”
