Carry On, ComPol Whylie!

Allen Whylie

Now it is no secret that crime is a major issue in Belize. Elsewhere in the Central American region, border countries such as Guatemalan and Honduras have seen a decrease in its murder rate. Belize, on the other hand, in last year saw one hundred and forty-murders; and the murder count continues to climb in 2018. According to Home Affairs Minister, Wilfred Elrington, only this week, the U.S. deported seven criminals to Belize and it is expected that there is going to be an increase in criminal activity. But the competency of the Commissioner of Police, Allen Whylie is always under question. Here’s Elrington response to a question on Whylie’s performance:

Wilfred Elrington

Wilfred Elrington, Minister of Home Affairs

“I can tell you that as far as I am concerned, I have no second guessing about Mister Whylie. I reiterate the position that I make that police is teamwork. I have found Mister Whylie to be quite intelligent; he seems to be a man of integrity, I have gotten no negatives from him, I have heard no negatives of him. I know we have a serious social problem where people are killing more than we would like to see that happen. I know that he and his team are trying their best to contain it. I know also too that there is an increase in homicides all over the region and I expect that it will get worse.”

“…only in Salvador; it is down in Honduras, down in Guatemala.”

Wilfred Elrington

“If it is down, it is only minimally down and the kind of resources that they are putting in there is humungous as oppose to us.”
