B.P.P. Says Lay Off the Maya

Last week, there were complaints by the Maya Leaders Alliance and Toledo Alcaldes Association that government or its agents tried to coerce and intimidate Maya leaders and residents of Toledo to support their taking the Guatemalan claim to the International Court of Justice. The Belize Progressive Party today issued a statement objecting to these tactics. It noted that the Maya requested inclusion in the discussion involving the claim, due to the fact that their land territory would be severely affected if the Guatemalans are successful at the Hague. According to the B.P.P., supporting the Prime Minister’s claim that the education program would be intensified, there is door-to-door visits collecting names of supporters. This includes checking identification, demanding Social Security information, and directly asking whether they would support taking the case to the I.C.J.  Accusing the government of deception in both their initial actions and denial of those actions, the B.P.P. reminds that Belize has everything to lose at the I.C.J. and Guatemala, nothing. It demands that the intimidation stop and that all Belizeans are included in the solution to the unfounded claim.
