Teen Jailed for Unlicensed Firearm

Tyree Gentle

A teenager has been sent to central prison after failing to evade police while carrying an unlicensed weapon. Nineteen-year-old Tyree Gentle of Racoon Street Extension was charged with possession of a nine-millimeter pistol for which he does not have a gun license. The pistol carried ten live rounds of ammunition for which he was also charged. Finally, there was a charge of driving a motor vehicle without holding a Belize driver’s license. On Monday evening at eight-fifty p.m., on Fairweather Street, police saw a vehicle in the area and its driver quickly sped away with police officers giving chase. The chase ended on George Street, where the driver was seen removing an object from his pants waist and throwing it away into the nearby area. Police caught up with the driver and escorted him back to the area he was seen throwing the object, which was found to be a nine-millimeter pistol. Gentle pleaded not guilty to both firearm charges, but admitted the traffic violation, for which he was fined a hundred dollars by Magistrate Khadeen Palmer. The fine must be paid by the first of March, or else a month’s imprisonment. But Gentle was sent to jail automatically due to the nature of his alleged offenses and told that he has the right to seek bail at the Supreme Court. The case is adjourned until May fourteenth, 2018.
