Annual Health Fair Offers Important Tests

According to Itch, over the years, Belizeans have failed to recognize that there is an increased number of persons being diagnosed with renal failure; majority, when the disease is already at an advanced stage. As a result, the Kidney Association of Belize, through its empowerment campaign, will also put off its annual health fair with sister health agencies for Belizeans to get tested. This year, a urinalysis test will be offered for those persons afraid of needles.

“Belize ahs a large number of persons with diabetes and also hypertension and some patients have both and they don’t take care of their diabetes and hypertension—they don’t control it. So what that does is that both of them destroy the nephrons that are in the kidneys. So over a period of time, the kidneys will definitely fail. And when it starts to fail, you basically have no symptoms so you will find out way at the end stage. Hence the reason, we will be doing some early detection.  Normally, we partner with the different non-profit organizations and other stakeholders from the Ministry of Health and what we do is we try to educate the public about the different diseases, mainly kidney disease. We try to do our educational campaign and try to do the preventative tests. We’ll have the sugar testing that will be done by the diabetes association and then we will have nurses out there doing the blood pressure testing. This year, we are kinda changing it a bit. We are doing the urinalysis test with the test strips. And based on that, we will decide if the persons will do the blood test.”

The general public is invited to the free health fair that will be held at the Swift Hall at the Saint Martin De Porres Church in Belize City.
