No Compromise for Opposition to Win

John Briceño

And while the P.U.P. effectively countered the suggestion of disunity on Sunday, another elephant in the room is financing. The party has consistently maintained that it will not accept campaign monies as quid pro quo for political favors for when, especially and including Lord Michael Ashcroft. But the United Democratic Party has once again raised the specter of Ashcroft control by suggesting that he met recently with P.U.P. leader John Briceño. Briceño says he’s willing to meet with anyone, but it will not lead to him betraying his country or his party.

John Briceño, P.U.P. Leader

“They do that every election. All I have to tell you: look at my record. In 2007, when my government was trying to settle the U.H.S. and I felt that the decisions they were making were not in the best interest of the country, of the people and the government – and what did I do? I resigned; I walked away. That alone can tell you what I stand for. I am prepared to work and meet with anybody as Prime Minister of this country, but I can tell you that I will always stand up for and on behalf of the people of this country. That did not change in 2007; it will not change today, and it will not change when we get to Belmopan and, God willing, I am the next Prime Minister of this country.”
