Still no date for referendum; GOB wants money

Wilfred Elrington

While Guatemala is holding a referendum in April, a date for when Belizeans will go to the polls to decide on whether or not the matter of the age-old territorial dispute with Guatemala, is yet to be finalized. That announcement is expected to be made in the latter part of the year, following the March municipals, as well as a subsequent redistricting exercise. The countrywide poll will cost the Government of Belize an estimated twenty million dollars. According to Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington, a budget is being put together for the pending education campaign.

Wilfred Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs

“No date has been set yet for our referendum for the very simple reason that before we can do that, we’ve got to complete the municipal elections and then we have got to do the re-registration and I think simultaneously we will have to do the redistricting.  And it is only after those are completed that we will be in a position to fix a date to hold the referendum.  Also too, the budget has not been settled upon yet.  We know that a figure of twenty million had been quoted just for the re-registration and redistricting exercise and I do know that our people are working for the budget for the education campaign that’s being worked on.”
