Welcome Assad? Prominent diplomat seeks return for referendum duty

Assad Shoman

For some time there has been talk that the country’s former chief negotiator Assad Shoman would be returning to work for the Government on the process taking the Guatemalan claim to the I.C.J. With tremendous experience as it relates to the dispute, Shoman has been meeting with government officials but the terms of his employment are yet to be agreed upon. Ambassador Alexis Rosado and Foreign Affairs C.E.O. Pat Andrews met with Shoman in Cuba recently. While nothing is etched in stone, Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington says that Shoman’s employment needs the approval of Cabinet.

“Assad actually just came in here this morning, I know he has been in discussion with my CEO and Alexis who, Alexis Rosado, we have decided internally that Alexis Rosado is going to be overall responsible for the education campaign.  Of course, the financial aspect of that will have to be controlled by the CEO Pat Andrews and about a week or two ago they did visit Assad in Cuba to talk to him on their way back to Belize from a conference which they had attended abroad.  He came in this morning with a view to see whether we can arrive at a mutually acceptable agreement for him to work with us.  I certainly would like to have him be involved as much as possible in the process.  He desires to be involved, but he wants to be and of course he will come with a price tag.  So all that has got to be settled upon and agreed.  There’s nothing established yet.  Anything that has to do with his employment and the like will ultimately have to get the blessing of the Cabinet.  But it’s being worked on by Alexis and CEO Andrews.”

Wilfred wasted time and resources, in negotiations accomplishing nothing.
