Rotaract clubs help fund NOPCAN

Story Picture
It’s not often that you hear about charitable organisations having excess funds…but that’s exactly what happened to Belize’s Rotaract clubs. And today those funds, totalling six thousand dollars, were put to good use by NOPCAN, the National Organisation for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect.

Laura Esquivel, Country Representative, Rotaract

“We chose a charity that we thought could put the best use to the money that we had raised. We chose NOPCAN because they have a countrywide reach; they reach people from up north all the way down south. Also because we are such a young club with young people, we wanted to give money that would benefit the young people of this country.”

NOPCAN will use the money to finance an after school programme for children in the Mayflower Street area of Belize City and another project in Orange Walk.

Lorna McDougall, Executive Director, NOPCAN

“We want to continue it because we see already where the children are benefiting from it. We have spoken to a number of teachers where these children go to school and they have told us that already they are seeing improvement in the work that these children do. And also in Orange Walk there has been identified the need to do a nurturing programme for young teenaged mothers, especially those who are unsupported.”

ROTARACT will officially hand over the cheques at a reception tonight when it will also pay tribute to its many sponsors. Marla’s House of Hope in Cayo also benefited from a six thousand dollar donation from the San Ignacio Rotaract club earlier this year.
