Douglas Lamb wins Krem Cycling Classic

Believe it or not, not everyone was sleeping in late on New Year’s Day. In fact, some sixty cyclists left Corozal town just after 9:00 a.m. as part of the thirteenth annual Krem Cycling Classic. Despite the heat, cramps and flat tires, these pedal pushers made it to Belize City in record time: three hours, fourteen minutes and thirty-eight seconds. Crossing the finish line first was Douglas “Barcelona” Lamb, representing team Santino’s. Lamb says he spent most of the race pacing for his team, so the outcome was quite unexpected.

“My victory was a sweet victory because I was working so hard in the race, I wasn’t even sure if I would have finished the race. But I went to the back of the pack and just start replenishing my body. Coming through Sandhill I started feeling much better and move up to the front where the action was.”

“I was a lone ranger from Santino’s team, so I just had to play my cards right all the way down, and being the pack was chasing, they were gambling with me because they say I am not a sprinter. So they just gamble with me and that’s how the victory came about.”

The race turned out to be a sweep for the Santino’s squad as members Marlon Castillo finished first for the juniors, John Burns took top honours in the non-elite division, and Fiona Humes Gonzalez won in the women’s category. Independent rider Hilton Morey took first place from the mountain bike crew. A special thanks to Zane Galvez for his camerawork at the finish line.
