…And Independence residents have water

Story PictureAnd while the Placencia water board continues to look for leaks, the neighboring community of Independence has sorted its water problem. And though faucets in the area are pouring, Independence’s Chairman, George Murray, says the village will still need a new water tank.

George Murray, Chairman, Independence Village (Via Phone)
“We made a bypass where the pipe coming direct from the pump—the one that use to go into the tank—and we bypass it direct on to the distribution line that goes to the village. Now the water they are getting is coming directly from the pump into the village. As of two yesterday, everybody had water. The only thing with this water, it’s coming direct from the pump so its not chlorinated because it’s not going into the tank and we advise the population that if they are gonna drink it, they should boil it first because we have no way to chlorinate it yet. This tank was built in 1989, and it was just for eighteen thousand gallons. At that time the population of Independence was only over two thousand, now we’re close to five thousand and if we build a new one, it should be something bigger than eighteen thousand.”

“But it is necessary to have another water tank.”

George Murray
“Oh yes, definitely. The only thing, this new one will have to be bigger than the one that we just lost.”

Murray says that the village council intends to buy a large industrial plastic tank in which the water can be chlorinated before it reaches residents of Independence.
