Is C.J. Benjamin Headed Back to Guyana?

Kenneth Benjamin

Could Belize lose Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin later this year? It depends on happenings in his native Guyana, where today President David Granger and Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo met to discuss the posts of Chancellor of the Judiciary and the Chief Justice. Benjamin has officially been recommended for the former post, which is described as the supreme authority of the Guyanese judicial system. According to the website of Guyanese newspaper Stabroek News a further meeting has been scheduled for February seventh, 2018 to discuss the appointments. According to the Guyanese constitution, the Opposition Leader must agree to appointments made by the President about these positions. Benjamin would replace acting Chancellor Carl Singh. But Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte has indicated that he has no indication from Benjamin that he wants to leave, and he is expected to address Belize’s judiciary when the Supreme Court meets to open the new legal year in a few days’ time. Chief Justice Benjamin has a number of outstanding judgments to meet from last year, which had prompted complaint from the Bar Association. Benjamin was appointed in 2011 to succeed Doctor Abdulai Conteh.
