P.M. Wants Answers on U.H.S. – B.N.T.U. Says Pay Up!

Earlier we told you about the PM’s New Year’s Day message. And while more than half of the message highlighted the infrastructural projects, the PM didn’t miss the opportunity to make brief mention of the CCJ’s judgment on UHS loan. He said the matter goes before the House this Friday, where representatives will vote to pay or not pay the ninety-million-dollar loan. We asked leader of the B.N.T.U. if she is hopeful that it will come to a resolution. Smith reiterated that the Government should make the payment.

Elena Smith, National President, B.N.T.U.

“I am hoping that what is tabled will be something that will get us out of this debt. Whether it be that they are going to be agreeing to some sort of payment plan; whether it be that they are going to be sitting down with Mister Ashcroft and working out some detail of this matter. I really am not sure what will be tabled, but I am hoping that we will not take the stand that we will not pay even if it gets to a billion, as the PM had said in a press briefing some time ago. The matter must be addressed because at the end of the day it will be us, the working population, who will be paying this debt. Not those in office, the politicians, but those of us who work hard and making it. We will be the ones, through our taxes who will pay it. So, I hope that better heads will prevail when it goes before the house and that it will be something beneficial to all parties, especially the Belizean people.”
