WPC Michelle Brown Arraigned for Murder of Fareed Ahmad

Michelle Brown

In this our first newscast for 2018, we start with a story which was the headline at the close of 2017; the murder of popular barber Fareed Ahmad. This morning, a heavily armed detail of police officers cordoned off the perimeter of the magistrates’ court in Belize City from as early as eight o’clock, well ahead of the arraignment of one of their own.  Twenty-four-year-old Michelle Brown became the first Woman Police Constable to be indicted for murder.  Brown limped into the lower court before Chief Magistrate Sharon Frazer where she was formally charged in connection with the shooting death of the Muslim businessman.  Shortly after her arraignment, the Belize Police Department convened the first of a biweekly media brief during which details of her arrest were divulged but there are still lingering questions.  According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, charges were preferred on the junior officer after sufficient evidence had been gathered to indict her in the murder.  Brown had been hospitalized in the immediate aftermath of the crash between miles sixteen and seventeen in Hattieville, but remained under police guard when it was discovered sometime thereafter that Ahmad had been fatally shot twice in the head prior to the accident.  The results of an autopsy indicate that Ahmad succumbed to gunshot injuries, as well as the impact of the massive collision.  The high-profile case is being investigated internally by the Professional Standards Branch.

“We know that Fareed had made a report to the police hours before he died and that was also a subject of our investigation to be able to see if there was any nexus between that report and his death.  So far our investigation has not revealed that there is any nexus between the two.  We also looked at whether or not Fareed and the WPC [Woman Police Constable Michelle Brown] knew each other and that is still up in the air.  We have not been able to confirm or deny the fact of whether or not they knew each other.  Our investigation to ascertain that issue will continue and we are hoping that we will be able to obtain Mr. Fareed’s phone which is in the possession of the family members, that we can go through it in their presence to see if we will find anything that could assist us in ascertaining a motive, as well as whether or not they were acquaintances in any way.  The post mortem examination was conducted on Friday and the doctor certified that he died as a result of blunt force trauma to the head as a result of a road traffic accident, as well as a consequence of gunshot wounds to the face.  We have since arrested and charged WPC Michelle Brown for the crime of murder, in respect of Fareed’s death and she was also charged administratively for neglect of duty in that she failed to hand over her issued firearm before reporting off duty, as well as for act of prejudice to good order and discipline in that by unlawful harm she caused the death of Fareed Ahmad.”
