Fire claims life of Toledo infant

Twenty-year-old Paulina Coc says there was nothing anyone could have done to save her one month old baby from a fiery death. The infant girl perished in a fire that broke out at the family’s house in Cattle Landing around 7:30 on Thursday night. According to the mother, the baby was sleeping in the bedroom and she had left the house to go and talk to her brother who lives across the street. It is not certain why the mother did not extinguish a home made lamp that was left lit in the room, but authorities believe this is what started the blaze that began sometime after the mother had left. Coc told police that while she was at her brother’s house, he alerted her that the house was on fire, but efforts to save the child were futile as the house was quickly destroyed by the flames. The child’s body has since been transported to the P.G. morgue where it awaits a post mortem examination. Police say at this time they do not know if any charges will be brought against the mother; only that their investigation into the tragedy continues. Baby Coc is the tenth child to die since mid November in what are considered to be preventable accidents.
