K.H.M.H.’s NICU Wins Christmas Decorating Competition

Every year, the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital carries out a Christmas decorating competition among its various units. Each staff of the different participating units develops a theme and they work together to build creative and meaningful displays within the open spaces of those units. This year they went all out with the décor – and stiff competition came down to the Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit and the Accident and Emergency Unit. Three professional judges David Matus, Khandice Tillett and Raul Villanueva judged the decorative displays and gave the win to NICU. We stopped by today to check out the work of the K.H.M.H. staff. Here’s what the P.R. Manager and the NICU Manager had to say about this year’s competition.

Tylon Tillett

Tylon Tillett, PR Manager, K.H.M.H.

“Every unit put up some kind of decoration to show the Christmas spirit to let our patients know that, although you are sick and here at the hospital that there is a different reality outside of the hospital. So, our staff goes the extra mile of creating these beautiful decorations that you are seeing to cheer up our patients, visitors and fellow staff members. It spreads Christmas cheer and helps to build teamwork amongst the units because all the members of the unit come together to make this happen. And we are using recycled materials that Is close by.”

Neroli Williams

Neroli Williams, Unit Manager, NICU, K.H.M.H.

“The theme is “From Candy Land to Bethlehem City: A Journey to Christ’s Birth.” The reason we have it as that is that this is the NICU and our aim is to care for the children. We know children love sweets and so we could display the sweets, Santa Claus and Christmas Tree in that area and we have Ginger Bread House and the snowman; we also have the elves and the nut cracker to guide the candy land. And then transitioning from that; from the warmth of the fireplace and everything is Bethlehem City where Jesus Christ was born and hence the reason for the season and that is where the main focus was. So, we went as far as making the Jordan River; displaying the hills in the City because Bethlehem was a very hilly City and we made the Palm Trees because it is a desert, so you won’t have much trees you will notice we only have palm trees.  Everything we make, except the lights, so we buy the material – some of the materials we use from here like the cotton, expired tubes. We use plates, paletas sticks, plastic, paper bags, cardboard boxes, we even begged for some of the marley rolls – if you notice the palm trees are made from the marley rolls and the crepe paper.”
