Tips for Christmas travel to Mexico

Hugo Suarez

The northern border may be seeing some extra traffic over this holiday, as Belizeans go over to neighboring Chetumal to shop while others go to holiday at Mexican destinations. The Mexican Embassy in Belize wants to remind travelers of the procedures at the border. Hugo Suarez tells us some of the main things you should remember and take in consideration when traveling over to Mexico.

Hugo Suarez, Legal Affairs & Press Consul, Mexican Embassy

“When you are Belizean, you don’t need a visa and you have the chance to spend 180 days in Mexico and when you come back you spend more than 7 days and you have to pay a fee of 500 pesos per person. The good part is that there are many chances to go to Mexico only with the border crossing pass for 7 days and not paying. And travelling to the southern states of Mexico – Chiapas, Quintana Roo, Campeche and Tabasco, mean that you as a Belizean can go to these states without having your passport but with your bordering crossing card. It is important to be prepared if you are travelling to another state in your own car, to another state than Quintanta Roo – you will have to have a special permit  for the car – the cost is 51 dollars plus taxes so it is around 60. You also have to make a deposit of around 200 -400 dollars depending the model, the year of the car and that money will be returned to you when you return the vehicle. This is very important to be ready to get these permits and all the documents you need as a person and as a car owner, in order to have pleasant trip to Mexico.”
