Government Plans U.H.S. Commission of Inquiry But What Will It Accomplish?

There will be a Commission of Inquiry into the Universal Health Services fiasco, as agreed between the National Trade Union Congress of Belize’s executive and Prime Minister Dean Barrow during a meeting in Belize City. According to an N.T.U.C.B. press release, the Commission will cover, (Quote) “all the transactions and circumstances of the acquisition of the Universal Health Services (U.H.S.) facility from inception to present, including questions of ownership and payments made to the Belize Bank Limited.” The Congress’ General Council previously passed a resolution asking for a full inquiry and says it expects full disclosure from all involved and recommendations to avoid a repeat. But among the skeptics is former interim president and long-time trade unionist Jacqueline Willoughby, who questions what can be achieved from what she called the “entertainment” of a Commission of Inquiry and who will pay for it. She questioned who could be prosecuted and concluded that nothing can be achieved here. A General Council meeting has been called for this weekend to act on drafting the terms of reference for the Commission at the Prime Minister’s invitation. While the N.T.U.C.B. had the ear of the Prime Minister, the also raised other issues relating to the Tri-Partite Body, re-registration, occupational safety and health, and pending litigation involving the Ashcroft Group of Companies.
