Mayor Seh So: CitCo Workers Get Pay Raise for Xmas!

Darrell Bradley

You heard the Mayor say that the City Council will come into some monies through revenue collection in the next few weeks – that is when the Belize Waste Control will start to get their monies for their services. But, overall, the City Council is not broke; in fact, he says they are doing quite well financially. Despite that, the Belize Waste Control must wait for trade taxes – but the staff at the Belize City Council doesn’t have to wait for those revenues to get a raise this month. Mayor Bradley has prioritized that increase, well, because, he says he is the Mayor and he can do so.

Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor

“The City Council is in a very healthy financial position and one of the evidence of that is our ability to commit and actually go through with a salary increase, which became effective on the first of December of this year. So, that this would affect all non-management staff of the City Council and people may realize that this present moment that the City Council employs about four hundred and fifty people. We are having a salary increase across the board of four percent for every person on the rank of a supervisor and a coordinator and that is in a certain pay scale and six percent for every staff below that rank. So, this is going to be very meaningful for the people who pick up the garbage, traffic officers, who really are the heart and soul of our city.”

“What is the annual recurrent cost of an increase like this?”

Darrell Bradley

“Well, I don’t know the annual recurrent cost. But in terms of our overall wage bill, in any given month, – in a year we pay about eight million dollars in salaries. So, that would represent 1/3 of our total budget which is within reason.”

Andrea Polanco

“Mayor, some might say why yuh nuh pay yuh bill with Waste Control?”

Darrell Bradley

“We don’t have a bill with waste control.  And some would respond to you, the person weh pick up your garbage on waste control, the person weh guide your traffic, protect you and suh, doesn’t that person deserve a raise? That person is the one who makes our city work, so rather than paying fifty-one thousand dollars per week to a service contractor we could have negotiated or done something in terms of a better deal or whatever, I would prefer to invest that money in the people who who labour and toil for our city, and the people who clean out our drains and who do the jobs that ordinary people don’t want to do to reflect that they have a better Christmas.”

“Some might say that they could ah wait wah two, three months down the road?”

Darrell Bradley

“I say that they can’t wait. I say. And I am the Mayor.”
