Auditor General Humble in Reviewing Impact of Senate Committee

The release of the immigration audit reports sparked a frenzy of criticism from the ruling party and others who accused the Auditor General and her team of failing to follow up with them as it relates to certain findings and conclusions in the report. At the hearing today, Bradley did not claim any vindication when asked if she felt the negative remarks were aimed at her.  She reiterated that her investigation was the proverbial tip of the iceberg in respect to this important department, and repeated her call for Belizeans to be vigilant and watchful for corrupt doings in the Government.

Dorothy Bradley, Auditor General

“I would not call it vindicated, because I never felt that way. We did an audit, we made a presentation, and once it reached, they established this Committee; I felt we were making progress. And it took a year, they met with different people, got the information they needed, and I am satisfied that we are at this point.”

“Given the interest that the public has kept over those months, are you satisfied that the Belizean people were keeping themselves informed as to what was taking place in these hearings?”

Dorothy Bradley

“I was very impressed, and I encourage people to continue, because if we have a watchdog for the country, I call the people of Belize the watchdog, and they must be vigilant, because out of that we saw what happened. So I encourage people to continue to do that.  It’s the right thing.  When – and maybe we need to clarify some of this – you take on an Audit, you hear that you are going into Immigration, for example, and people expect that you are examining just about everything in Immigration – that’s not how it works. With Audit you will find a subject matter, you will develop your criteria and based on those criteria then you go and you examine. So for example, we did not have to do all these three; we could have stuck with visa and we do visa, except that the public had interest and we felt that we had the need to satisfy.”
