With Public Hearings Over, Report Due Early Next Year

Mark Lizarraga

Business Community Senator Mark Lizarraga acted as pro-tem chair for today’s final meeting, which was delayed due to an administrative error that pushed the start time from this morning to this afternoon. Absent were the two Government representatives, regular chairman Aldo Salazar and Doctor Carla Barnett, and Opposition representative Eamon Courtenay, was substituted by Michel Chebat. But now that it’s all over comes the writing of the final report, which will take place early in the New Year after a holiday break.

Mark Lizarraga, Pro-tem Chair, Senate Special Select Committee

“We’re meeting again on the thirteenth – the second Wednesday, I think, in January – to decide and chart the way forward. The Committee will be meeting with its attorney and we’re going to come up with a draft schedule and a draft plan for the way forward. We haven’t gotten there yet, we’re still tangled up in the actual hearings; but we now move to a new stage. Look at the evidence, speak to the attorneys, make sure that we each, individually, give some guidance as to what it is that we want to see in the report and of course there is also the opportunity for a minority report if individual Senators feel different than the majority of Senators; but basically we’ll be talking about the way forward in terms of the drafting and writing of the report. I think we’ve had over forty hearings. We have had several in-camera, off-camera, in private; so it’s voluminous. We have quite a bit of testimony. And no, I don’t have an idea; the Committee has not set targets, per se. We just have to look at what it is that we want to include. I think we’ll all probably take some time to write down the highlights, the areas that we all want to look at to make sure that those areas are highlighted in the report and then we go from there.”
