Special Olympics Goes on the Run

On Saturday morning, the Police Department along with sister enforcement agencies—such as the B.D.F. and the Coast Guard—embarked on a ‘Torch Run’ carrying the Flame of Hope. Over the course of one week, the torch will make its way through the different municipalities to create awareness to the community about Special Olympics Belize and the athletes who participate in the games. The fundraising venture culminates with the official national games, which will be held this Friday at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex in Belize City. Inspector Elroy Carcamo says that the target is ten thousand dollars in cash, but the awareness campaign is priceless. Today, the torch was paraded through south side Belize City and others joined in on the sixth annual Law Enforcement Torch Run.

“The Law Enforcement Torch Run comprises of law enforcement agencies. So we have the B.D.F., the Police, Coast Guard, Immigration, Transport Department and Customs on board. While they are not at all the areas running with us, they participate and support and on the last day they will be bringing out their group to participate in the event.  Once you are out there running, people want to know what they are running for and we explain to them that we are trying to raise funds. We have persons who are out there with baskets and you donate what you can. We take anything like what I tell them; five cents, ten cents, dollar and if you do not have, just give us a smile and that changes your attitude because you are welcomed by the community. Working and participating in events with these children or youths or even adults living with intellectual disabilities changes your life; it makes you want to do more for your community.  This evening we came in Belize City; we left from San Ignacio. We did Benque San Ignacio and we are just concentrating in the populated areas. Then we came into south side Belize City and then we are going to San Pedro where we will have a little booth out there tonight and tomorrow morning we will do San Pedro. We’ll take the torch run in San Pedro whilst on the north side of Belize City; the police officers will be rotating the torch within that area. From there, we go to Corozal, come back down to Orange Walk and then culminate the Friday in Belize City with the grand end national games.”
