Local government officials to be trained on UNCAC

Darrell Bradley

Saturday next, December ninth, is the one year anniversary of Belize’s becoming a signatory to the United Nations Convention against Corruption. The Government has been tasked with laying the groundwork, not only for change and regime implementation, but also attitudes on the ground from students and teachers to officials in key positions. The Ministry of Local Government and the Belize Mayors’ Association are spreading the word with a one-day training this coming Wednesday at the Radisson Fort George Hotel as explained by Belize City Mayor Darrell Bradley.

“This will be an all day session, which will feature presentations from various entities within Belize that are responsible for ensuring the appropriateness of government business including the presentations from the Auditor General’s department, presentations from the Integrity Commission, presentations from the Ombudsman. We will also be talking about leadership and accountability as a facet of effectiveness and one of the reasons why the council decided to do this, in coordination and collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and the mayor association is that we are mindful of the one year anniversary of the government of Belize signing on to the United Nations convention against corruption and we believe that it is a big step for the country and we believe that our sectors of government must make improvements in sectors of transparency and accountability.”
