Mahogany Heights is name of new city

Story Picture
It was one of the first major projects announced by the P.U.P. government after the 1998 elections. And after a few delays, on Saturday the new city at mile thirty-one finally showed itself off to the public. Not only were there dozens of new houses, but also a new name.

Carolyn Trench Sandiford, Consultant, Mahogany Heights

“Mahogany, being our national tree, also symbolizes strength, endurance and resilience; heights for the heights above sea level. So ladies and gentlemen, the new name for the new city at la Democracia at mile thirty-one, formerly known as the satellite city, is mahogany heights. The winner, or the person submitting the entry was one Yolanda Rector of Belize City.”

Yolanda Rector, Submitted Winning Name

“I’m very, very thankful, grateful for this opportunity and I’m glad that I’m going to be a part of this brand new beautiful city. Thank you.”

Prime Minister Said Musa

“I feel very proud to be alive today to be a part of this historic moment when our grandchildren will look back on this day, the eight of February, 2003 when this new city was founded. And we have a lot of pine trees around, but now we have to plant mahogany trees. We have to plant ten thousand more mahogany and make this truly mahogany heights.”

For coming up with the winning name, Yolanda Rector received a three-bedroom house and lot at Mahogany Heights. Prospective residents may choose from a number of different size houses and lots or may purchase just the land alone.
