National Assembly Has Tough Decision to Make

Patrick Faber

But with all that said and done – the CCJ judgment still stands and G.O.B. must now cough up ninety million Belize dollars. And where will this money come from? DPM Faber says that for now he does not know and that will be up to the Minister of Finance, PM Barrow. But what he does know is that it has to be taken to the House of Representatives for approval and from there the decisions will be made as to how G.O.B. will move forward. Faber says that it should make for an interesting matter in the House, considering that Said Musa is also a member.

Patrick Faber, Deputy Prime Minister

“I am very much interested in finding out what he will do because you know that this matter has to go to the House of Representatives for us to appropriate monies to pay this. This is not a small amount of money and I am very much interested to hear what his comment will be and his vote will be more particularly. Although, I am not certain of what the Government’s position – the Cabinet’s position will be just yet, that will have to come. But I am going to pay keen attention because he has to be ashamed of any such discussion in the House and any words he is going to put forth to support his masters.”

“In any case, sir, where is the money going to come from; any ideas so far?”

Patrick Faber

“Well, that is a matter for the Minister of Finance. But money is finite they say. I have experienced that, I guess we have all experienced that. But wherever the money is going to come from you can be sure that it is going to short change something else that we could be using the monies for development purposes. So, this size of payment and that size of loan agreement needs the approval of the House of Representatives. You could argue that the Senate doesn’t have to approve it, but it will go to the Senate nonetheless. And we need the support of the House. Whether the House will support or not , that is a question we have to discuss and decide on because you don’t want to be caught in a situation where you seem to be guiding – the country’s leadership is guiding us to break the law or to send the wrong signal to the international community in terms of confidence in our economy. So, we have to be very careful. We are threading on difficult waters here.”
