Police Respond to Deployment along Highway

Edward Broaster

Four persons died in two accidents at the same location in less than twenty-four hours. According to police, they will be able to rule out alcohol as one of the factors leading to the accidents until after post-mortems are conducted.  Today at a press briefing, Commander of Operations ACP Edward Broaster was questioned about police presence along a highway that was busy with motorists because of the celebrations in the south. Here is what he had to say.

ACP Edward Broaster, Commander of Operations

“Well, our thing would not have been on the Hummingbird Highway, per se. It would have been in the area of Dangriga and I am sure that the Dangriga Formation had things in place to mitigate any drunken drivers being entering on the road.”

“So, you’re saying there was nothing from the police on the highway?”

ACP Edward Broaster

“I am not saying that. I am saying that the Dangriga Formation had things in place to ensure there were no individuals entering the Hummingbird under the influence of alcohol.”

“I travelled the highway and there was not one single police vehicle or officer on the entire highway on the eighteenth in the day or the nineteenth morning. Where would they have been?”

ACP Edward Broaster

“I cannot argue with what you saw because you saw what you saw. But I am sure we had special patrol units on the highway.”

“Why did not law enforcement react in a proactive was to pre-empt further loss of life?”

ACP Edward Broaster

“I cannot speak for Ministry of Works. But, like you said, the bridge has been that way for a while and we haven’t been having any accidents in that area. It is just unfortunately that we had two; you are saying three. Well, it just happened throughout the weekend and when the post-mortem is conducted we will know more or less what were the contributing factors.”
