Guat Military Crossed Border with Camera Crew – Big Deal?

Colin Griffith

Later in this newscast, we will show you what the Customs Department is doing about enforcement on importation of known counterfeit goods. But the Department is practically a sort of border patrol along with Immigration and Nationality. On Friday at the western border, four Guatemalan soldiers and a media crew entered the Champon or so-called “no man’s land” section of the border, talking to persons crossing over. They then took video of the Immigration Hall and other secure areas on the Belize side, prompting Belize police to come over to question them. It was not clear what their intentions were, and police have not issued their side of the story. Today, while the Comptroller of Customs said that it was primarily an Immigration situation, he does not consider it to be too much of a big deal.

Colin Griffith, Comptroller, Customs and Excise Department

“I truly cannot comment on that situation. Communication was made to myself last week by a media house and I communicated with my officers in Benque, and they said the Guatemalans had only come around by the area that is referred to as Champon, which is a normal thing. So I personally didn’t see it as anything to be alarmed about. But truly it is the Immigration Department that should comment in respect to that situation. It has nothing to do with Customs.”

  1. Maynor Peña says:

It is a problem the Guatemalans are taking us for puppets. If it`s not a big deal lets put it to the test, send our BDF with our media to the same area and see if they will not do something about it.
