Women Accusing Rape in Independence Had Sex; Police Don’t Know Much More

Joseph Myvett

Is the Belize Police Department attempting to keep under wraps details of an alleged incident in Independence where two women are said to have been raped while in detention last weekend?  Information on what purportedly transpired while the pair was in police custody is hard to come by, despite previous requests to the Professional Standards Branch for gathered facts to be shared with the media.  This morning, ACP Joseph Myvett was able to confirm that examinations conducted on the women have established that they were both carnally known, as opposed to being raped.  Aside from this morsel, there really isn’t much coming out of the department, not even the slightest indication of how many officers are being investigated.

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch

“Yes, the investigation or the examination proved that they were carnally known.”

“So what’s the status, right now, of the investigation?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“The investigation is still ongoing.”

“Okay sir, I know you won’t agree with me but I’ve been reporting the news a long time and it’s a very long time for a rape investigation to continue.  Usually when this happens someone in politics or in law enforcement is involved, meaning that the police lack the will to bring the charges.  Is the department covering for its own officers, who the allegation is acted in a grotesque criminal fashion?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“Of course not.  As I had mentioned to you at the last briefing, there are some investigations that require more in depth looking into than others and this is one of those investigations that have led us in different directions, or should I say there are certain inconsistencies which we need to clarify in regards to the investigation. At this point in time whilst the investigation is still ongoing and there are no charges, the officers remain on duty.”

“Is there a timeframe for when the investigation might finish?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“I don’t [know].  I will not be in a position to answer that, I know the investigators are on the ground in regards to this matter.”
