The Great Pen Cayetano Paints Garifuna ‘Legacy’

Pen Cayetano wants to share the Garifuna culture with Belizeans this nineteenth. The renowned artist is opening an exhibition called ‘Legacy’ at his gallery in Dangriga. The collection of paintings will show different aspect of the Garifuna people. Cayetano told us about what you can expect from these new pieces in his latest art show.


On the Phone: Pen Cayetano, Artist

“We are talking about the things that the Garifuna people towards the tradition we have here in Dangriga. So, we have the beluria part of the culture which is very strong and the cassava baking that is still a part of the culture and still going on here. We also have the washing by the river and these are the cultural things that I am going to portray in this exhibition.”


Andrea Polanco

“Right. So, you’re depicting all these elements of the Garifuna culture through paintings and art?”


Pen Cayetano

“Yes, through the paintings and art. As well, we are trying to make this exhibition successful. Before this, I have always done my exhibitions in Belize [City] at the Mexican Institute, but I want to make my studio gallery here in Dangriga the center of arts in Belize.”


Andrea Polanco

“Do you know, at this time, approximately how many pieces you will have on display?”


Pen Cayetano

“We will be having at least about 35 pieces on display and will be mostly about this great culture of ours.”


Andrea Polanco

“Any of them are new or are these older pieces?”


Pen Cayetano

“They are very new. These ones from Hopkins Village; some from the culture here doing the drumming; from under the coconut trees collecting some coconuts; TV Ramos writings and we also have a woman smoking her pipe and other pieces of the culture like a guy fishing and so on.”


The exhibition opens on Saturday, November eighteenth at four p.m. and will run through to December sixth at Pen Cayetano Studio Gallery in Dangriga. Some of the paintings will be available for sale.
