Zoning Contributing to Parking Problem

Darrell Bradley

The challenge, according to Mayor Bradley, is that a lack of zoning forces motorists to compete for public parking and that buildings should have been erected with a private parking as a part of the property’s design.

Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor

“If you have parking on the street it’s a competitive thing.  If you have businesses in the area, whoever gets the parking first keeps the parking.  You don’t have an entitlement to parking in front of your area.  For residential properties it is a thing where you would have that right to say that if it is a residence and this is a residential area then nobody should park in front of your house, especially if you have a gate or if you have a driveway.  But for commercial purposes, the requirement actually is that you should have onsite parking for your patrons and your employees.  One of the things that I make much of in Belize City is that we need to move towards zoning.  You would have heard that we would have raised a significant issue in relation to noise abatement in this entire Newtown Barracks area.  We had at least six to seven public meetings, we’re doing zoning, but only in the area of King’s Park, but one of the things that we have to do is we have to do comprehensive zoning in Belize City, it’s not only noise.”
