Soldier Charged in Dangriga Hit & Run
In another accident in the south, a Belize Defense Force soldier has been charged in connection with a fatal hit and run incident that occurred near the outskirts of Dangriga on Friday night. Forty-two-year-old Donald Enriquez failed to stop and render aid after knocking down a cyclist along the Hummingbird Highway sometime around seven-forty-five p.m. When police were called to the scene of the accident, they observed thirty-four-year-old Hubert Lucas on the road next to a beach cruiser bicycle. He was suffering from extensive head and body injuries. According to investigators, Enriquez was driving a Toyota Four Runner in the direction of Hopkins Village and upon reaching miles one and two, Lucas rode out of a side street into the path of his vehicle. Assistant Commissioner of Police Joseph Myvette provided additional details of the hit and run.

“In respect to the second road traffic accident, one Donald Enriquez was driving in Dangriga Town en route to the six miles junction when upon reaching a junction in Dangriga, he collided into a cyclist who rode out onto the highway. The cyclist was later learned to be Hubert Lucas, thirty-four-years-old. The driver, Mr. Enriquez did not stop and fled the scene. Police investigation later led to his detention and the vehicle was impounded. He has since been served notice of intended prosecution, whilst the investigation continues into this matter.”
