20 Years for Glenford “Bucket” Bermudez on Wife Manslaughter

Glenford Gilbert Bermudez

Justice Adolph Lucas this afternoon sentenced forty-six-year-old Glenford Gilbert Bermudez to twenty years imprisonment for the November twenty-second, 2007 killing of his wife.  The time Bermudez has spent behind bars, which is nine years ten months and eighteen days will be deducted from his twenty-year sentence which means he will be spending another ten years behind bars. On October thirty-first, 2017, Bermudez pleaded guilty to the alternative charge of manslaughter instead of murder.   Judge Lucas today said that he took into consideration, both the mitigating and aggravating factors in arriving at a suitable sentence for the crime he committed.  He also took into consideration, a victim impact assessment report from two of the seven children of the victim, as well as an affidavit, filed by defence attorney Oscar Selgado regarding his good behaviour while at the Belize Central Prison.  After sentencing today, Racquel Bermudez’s eldest daughter Florent told us she accepts the verdict, but it does not take away ten years of pain for her family.

“So how have you all been able to explain to a then-two-year-old – how old is she now, about twelve? – how have you been able – that transition from losing her mother so young to now? How have she been able to cope with it? Does she understand where Mommy has gone? How have you been able to talk to the youngest about the death of her mother, so young?”
