Zheng Yuanran to be Expelled from Belize

Alejandro Cowo

A pair of Asian men, one a Taiwanese/Belizean from Camalote, Cayo and the other a Chinese businessman, pleaded guilty to falsifying immigration documents when they appeared in the Belmopan Magistrate’s Court.  The duo has been in detention since Monday after being busted while attempting to apply for a Social Security Card using a bogus Belizean nationality certificate, back dated ten years ago when security features were not as strict.  The men were caught when they went to the S.S.B. offices in Belmopan and were promptly handed over to the Immigration Department. On Wednesday, they were both able to meet fines of one thousand dollars each, Zheng Yuanran and his translator, Zheng Hui Lin, continue to be held by police, pending additional charges related to the matter.  Today, Zheng was back in court for offenses under the S.S.B. Act.  He initially pleaded not guilty to the charge, but later changed his plea to guilty and fined one hundred dollars.  Meanwhile, it is believed that Lin has been involved in other cases of falsifying documents. According to the Officer Commanding the Crimes Investigation Branch in Belize City, the Major Crimes Unit of the police department are involved in the investigation.

ASP Alejandro Cowo, O.C., C.I.B., Belize City

“I know that they were detained and they were charged for some offences by immigration.  They went to the court and they pled guilty yesterday.  They were fined a thousand [dollars], plus five dollars cost of court.  Today’s date, Social Security is to lay charges on them for another matter relating to social security.”

“Okay, I know, or I am told that Major Crimes is dealing with the case since there has been a history of immigration or falsifying immigration documents and it appears by the, at the station of the Immigration Department that they have a fraudulent nationality certificate.  Is Major Crimes investigating it as part of a wider ring of immigration fraud?”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“Yes, the police is doing part of the investigation.  The Immigration Department is dealing with that internally and also Social Security.  It’s the three agencies combined together, working to see from where the certificate was obtained to the point [where] it reached social security and the police is dealing with the investigative matter in regards to the fraudulent document.”

“Okay, now there is another person involved who is a translator.  He is from Camalote Village, a Taiwanese/Belizean, I understand.  His name is Mr. Lin.”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“He was detained along with Mr. Zheng.  Both of them were charged, as I mentioned, both of them went to the court and pleaded guilty and they were fined the same amount of money, a thousand dollars, plus five dollars cost of court.”

“Okay, but Mr. Zheng won’t face the social security.  I understand he is being released.”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“No.  He is still pending that investigation yet.  And also an additional house search was conducted at Mr. Lin’s residence where other copies of documents were found at his residence.  So police are looking into that to see what other charges can be levied against him.”

Zheng remains in police custody tonight, pending an expulsion order.
